Three values, and which one the books use

At cost is what you paid for the stock you still hold. At selling price is what it would bring in if it all sold today. The gap is the profit still sitting on the shelf.

For the books, stock is valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value (AS 2). Net realisable value is what the item will now sell for, less any cost of selling it.

The comparison is made item by item. Last year's model that will now sell for less than it cost is written down on its own, even if the shelf as a whole is worth more than it cost. Comparing only the totals would hide exactly the stock that is losing money.

Questions

Asked about this

Should cost include GST?

If you claim input tax credit, no: use the cost before GST, since that GST comes back to you. Freight and other costs of bringing the stock to your shop belong in cost.

What if an item has not sold in months?

Enter the price it would realistically fetch now, not the price on the tag. If that is below cost, the item is written down and highlighted.

Is anything I type here saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and makes no request with the figures you enter.
