Why 10% + 5% is not 15%

A second discount comes off the price that is already reduced. ₹1,000 less 10% is ₹900, and 5% off ₹900 is ₹855. The customer saves ₹145, which is 14.5%, not 15%.

On a GST bill, a discount shown on the invoice at the time of sale comes off the taxable value before GST is worked out. So the tax is charged on the discounted price, not the original one.

If the price you start from already includes GST, the calculator can show how much of the final price is tax.

Questions

Asked about this

Is GST charged before or after the discount?

After. Under section 15(3) of the CGST Act, a discount recorded on the invoice at the time of supply is excluded from the value of supply, so GST is worked out on the price after the discount.

How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?

Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original, and multiply by 100. Enter the difference as a flat discount here and the calculator shows the percentage.

Is anything I type here saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and makes no request with the figures you enter.
